Scudder, such a beautiful and moving poem. One of my favorite lines: “A goldfinch perches

just above as if to brag what yellow could be.”

Thank you for that phrase and for the poem.

I really enjoyed the feeling of sitting with you accompanied by the movements of the birds, not only the hawk (the goldfinch perches . . . as if to brag what yellow could be"), your dog intent on his own morning, coming to a stillness in your perceptions and fullness of feeling. And the photo of the sculpture. Thanks for the poignant experience.

Beautiful new version of this, Scudder.

As with so many of your poems, the beauty and the pain are equally present and equally cherished.

This is rare, lovely, and very familiar to my experience as well.

I recall myself being a small part of loss and the "community of creatures" and the "business of being" when I once noticed a Hermit Thrush, over the course of a couple days while I was at the house, come and go repeatedly to its perch at the tip of Emily's sculpture. Sending love to you and Susan.

You convey in such vivid imagery and honesty the solace nature offers. And the photos show us what you see from your porch, adding even more texture to the poem. Beautiful, Scudder.
